I used putty as serial monitor since the built in monitor didn't have all baud rates preprogrammed. Data transfer rates up to 921,600 baud rates and the 128 byte deep transmit and 256 byte receive FIFOS, coupled with 1Mbit line drivers deliver uncompromising performance on your laptop/PC. You can read the Atmel and the FT232 (or whatever you're using) datasheets to find out the maximum but I am able to successfully use 230400 (twice as fast as the largest the Arduino Serial Monitor supports) with no issues. The Baud steps is either 200% or 150% of the previous value (There is exceptions). USB to Serial adapter providing one RS232 serial port. The Arduino Serial Monitor window limits you to 115200, but that's not the highest baud rate capable.

The flexible baud rate generator of PL-2303HXD could be programmed to generate any rate between 75 bps to 12M bps. When real RS232 signaling is not required, baud rate higher than 115200 bps could be used for even higher performance.
